The Whyville Times

Hey y'all!
Here, I'm going to tell you about the Whyville Times!
That's right! if you are a writer or blogger and you have an issue you'd love to write about and debate, Whyville is the place! We have a nice little newspaper that is totally written by Whyvillians! Each week, you can submit a Times entry to times@whyville.net. They subject line MUST be formatted as: Section, Whyville Name, Title
Each week the TE (Times Editor) will publish about 30-40 wonderful pieces! I myself write and chat in the BBS regarding many of the articles.
What is the BBS you ask?
Well the BBS is where the author can be critiqued and also people can say their take on the article. Make sure your advice helps and does not hinder!
Did you think Whyville was JUST for little children? Well you're wrong! lately there have been more and more HARD-HITTING stories that definitely got Whyville talking! You want to be that person? Well submit to the Times! If not, read them! they are great and are written by people JUST LIKE YOU.
So many more people have been reading articles. Why you say? Because of the new Whyville Times Awards! You saw the voting on the Welcome Page. The WTA are a new honor coming to Whyville from cobd. Each year from now on the greatest articles in 13 categories will be honored. This year the first ever, I was lucky enough to be nominated. It felt great!
But hey, you want to win the WTA? Want to write? Already love to write? Want to refine your writing? Want to get feedback on it?
The write for the Whyville Times! You can submit poetry, interviews of Whyvillians, reports on Whyville events or even political and social issues outside of Whyville. There are so many topics. And no one will write them... Unless YOU get involved and YOU write them!

WhyFlu 2007

This year, there has been a recent outburst of the new WhyFlu- known as WhyFlu 2007. At this stage, it has been around for a short amount of time. The CDC has been opened and re-vamped to help better deal with what is predicted to be the new epidemic. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has been around before though for previous outbreaks, but now we have a new issue- The new WhyFlu. When the CDC had first been re-vamped, there were 3 cases you could study. There was also a BBS-like discussion area when citizens could postulate and also report their cases. This was helpful in gathering information. Also, the CDC has and epidemic and infection simualtor, when you can test settings to see how many people would be affected and so forth. These tools all help you gather information. For what you say? Well, on previous WhyFlu updates, there was a salary game. It was for the epidemic for WhyPox, but this year we have WhyFlu as the epidemic. Are we going to have a salary game? What is it like? I think that Whyville should implement a new salary game for this. That way, it will help you learn more about Flus and also apply what the Infection Simualtor and Epidemic Simualtor teach you. Now, no one plays these because there is no reward, nothing to apply it too. If we added a salary game, people would pay attention and start putting more time and effort into learning about flus and how they spread, how iit can become an epidemic, etc. I think that Whyville should begin on focusing on adding more incentives to play certain games. I play games whenever I can, and I like trying out the simualtor too. It is fun, yet even if I guess everything correctly, there is not reward. I think this should change and that will attract more people to these games. xoxo LaDiDah

Whyville BBS

Here in Whyville, we have a complete fictional society. We have a government, citizen rights, we have a Senate as well. We even have a newspaper. Instead of a 'To the Editor' section we have a Whyville BBS. After reading various newspaper articles, you can post your thoughts in the BBS. In the BBS you try not to ruffle any feathers, even if your opinion does so. People should not call you mean and hurtful names or send you hate mail because of this. That is wrong. But if you want to disagree with the position of the article you can do that. Also, it offers positive and negative feedback for the author because people will post what they liked about the style of the article or not. They also, in many cases give constructive criticism to help the author. Some articles get a very heated debate. Like 'Purity: Is it Really Worth Celebrating?' In last week's edition. The author's stance was that people should abstain from sex, and even dares to say kissing (The very intimate form) before marriage. She describes it as, "Think of yourself as a present. You don't want the tape not to stick, or the wrapping to be torn. If you truly loved your spouse, wouldn't you want that present to be just perfect? And, what if someone fully opened the box and took everything out of it (having an "intimate" relationship)?" (book67) This phrase was furiously debated over in the BBS. Many people agreed with her, as I and many other were appalled that she was seeming to call people who kiss before 'unpure' This seemed to set off and offend many people. But even though many were offended, I did not see once that someone called each other names. So, remember proper etiquette and please do not say hurtful things at people or accuse them of anything if they just don't share your opinion.

What has gone wrong?

Whyville today has many things that could be fixed in my opinion. First off, some of the games such as the Sun-spot puzzle and the Solastice safari do not work. I feel that this hinders some people's ablity to get a higher salary. Also, many people are scam artists. I know that Whyville is doing all that it can, but seriously! Why do people try and steal other people's money instead of trying to earn it themselves? Also many new things are being added to Whyville. I kinda liked Whyville before all these changes such as the scion tracks and everything came about... Also there is no more flus... I liked trying to make the vaccines! I think that since it has been so long... a new round of it should hit soon! :} Also some things that are happening is that many newbies want to lower the scion prices. This would not be fair to all the oldbies who worked so hard to get their scions at the price they are now. i think if Whyville ever did want to lower scion prices, I think that they should just make all the add-ons cheaper like only 100 for each one. And not make scion less than 10000, because otherwise people might not want them so much. Also if the price did go down, people should definately get a refund. Another annoying thing I have noticed is that everytime I go to the Land Office and 4pm Whytime, When it says plots will be available, there are none. I think that they should make more plots because it annoys me how the people who are not on Whyville anymore still have their plots and we can't get any more! Well even with all these small pestering things, Whyville is still great so check it out! Peace, LaDiDah :}

Trials For A Newbie Helper

I want to be a Y-mail helper, Also known as a newbie helper. There are a few things that you must in order to even qualify. You must have a 100 clam salary, No bad behavior for 90 days, And also be a member for 90 days. I figured out that on June 20th I can take the Newbie Helper test. See, Newbie helpers answer mail from distressed newbies and they can answer questions at the Newbie Lounge. In order to prepare to do this job, I went to the Newbie Center to listen to the types of questions asked and I practiced responding to them. I also went on the chair a couple of times to ask questions that I thought about that I myself did not know. After all this, I went to my friend, Who is a Y-mail helper and asked her to coach me. I answered some questions she had trouble with and I also just watched again, What she did. i asked for tips to get my salary higher. She said to work at it little by little. So I did. Every day, I would do 1 of salary. everyday I got closer to my goal. I now have a 100 clams salary. Now all I have to do is wait until the 20th, And then I can take the Newbie Helper test. I asked for tips on that as well. My friend just told me that I would know everything they asked if I had payed attention at the Newbie Center. So I reccamend that you follow these steps too if you want to be a Y-mail helper. xxLaDidahxx

My typical day in Whyvlle!!! Well today I started off the day by signing in and then I replied to all the mail I had gotten that day. After, I read all the notices on the Welcome Page!!! :} I also checked out the times, read the article on Autism and read some of the BBS postings. Then, After that, I went to the face factory to see hoe many part I sold. I diid not sell any, So then I spent some time making a couple of earrings. After this, I just checked back on my mail and saw that my friend had replied so I wrote back and used the freind finder to meet her and couple of my other freinds. We met at South Beach and then talked for a while. One of my freinds needed new hair so we all headed down to the trading post and showed her our hair. My freind traded with all of us then put on her new stuff. After that they had to leave and I hung out in the trading post. :} After that, I met my Whyville frinds for a party at the disco. Muah! It was fun. After that, We drove aroung in Scions seeing if we could name people we saw in the windows. :} That was my typical day in Whyville!
